Synopsis
Freedom is set in 1991, when former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated by a few Sri Lankan refugees who had taken refuge in Tamil Nadu. In response, the Tamil Nadu police detained several men and women and brought them to Vellore Fort for investigation. However, under the guise of interrogation, they were harassed, brutally injured, and tortured by the police. Determined to escape the torment, the inmates devised a plan to dig a tunnel and flee the fort. Will they succeed in their daring attempt, or not, and who is Maaran?
Plus Points (+)
One thing that is very beautiful about Tamil cinema is diversity, where you watch different genres of movies like action, thriller, drama, and suspense, but nowadays Tamil cinema covers true events through movies. Freedom is this kind of movie, which is emotional because in this movie there are many scenes where torture and harassment are very common, so if you're below 18+, I don't recommend this movie to you.
The first half is a mixture of drama and historical scenes where the camera focuses on 1991, when many Sri Lankan refugees sought shelter in Tamil Nadu, while the second half is a combination of torture and harassment by Tamil Nadu police.
After the success of Tourist Family, M. Sasikumar once again appears in the lead cast of Freedom, meaning he is the main hero in the movie, and the whole thing revolves around him. In the first half, his performance is decent, like a common man in a crowd, but in the second half, his performance is outstanding, like you are watching revolutionary movies. How he developed hope in other refugees is watchable.
One thing you notice about director Sathyasiva, who is popular for Kazhugu and Kazhugu 2, is that his first choice is always M. Sasikumar, because Naan Mirugamaai Maara and Freedom are both movies directed by Sathyasiva, and both movies lead cast is M. Sasikumar. Now finally, I thanks director Sathyasiva, who shone a flashlight on the dark history of Sri Lankan refugees through his movie about torture and harassment by Tamil Nadu police in the early 90s.
Minus Points (-)
No doubt director Sathyasiva is a very talented person in the Tamil film industry now. With M. Sasikumar, he comes with the movie Freedom, which is good, and the cast selection is excellent, but Freedom has an overdose of physical violence. The second half has many scenes where violence leads the movie instead of drama.
